8:30 – 9:30 AM: Federal Legislative and Regulatory Update 2018
– Kristen Basista, Esq and John Leardi, Esq
Healthcare is in flux…to say the least. 2017 saw multiple attempts and failures to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) legislatively, but also significant regulatory changes that impact the implementation of the ACA. 2018 will likely see additional legislative and regulatory enactments that will have a direct impact on podiatrists practicing throughout the country. This workshop will run through and explain in plain English the most germane updates and initiatives, including those related to the ACA, Medicare, and everything in between.

9:45 – 11:45 AM: MIPS Update – Michael Brody, DPM
We are now in the second year of MIPS, and some items have changed while others have remained the same. Learn how you can improve how you did in 2017 with very little additional effort. The session will review updates on Quality Reporting, Practice Improvement Activities, Advancing Care, and will review what is the “cost category.”
11:45 – 12:00 PM MIPS – Even if you did nothing in 2017, You Can Still Avoid a Penalty
– Michael Brody, DPM

1:00 –2:00 PM: Cyber Security Update – Michael Brody, DPM
Protecting your patient records is about several things: Protecting patient information and avoiding a HIPAA breach and large fines; Protecting the availability and integrity of your Billing Records; and, Protecting patient information so that you can provide quality care to your patients.
2:00 – 2:45PM Refining Your Revenue Cycle Management Process - John Leardi, Esq
Traditionally, cashflow of most podiatry offices has been based largely upon third-party payer reimbursements, i.e., Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance. Today, patients are being expected to pay for more of their own care. While third-party payers are constantly creating burdensome reimbursement rule policies and procedures or whether billing and collections are handled internally or outsourced, there must be an effective revenue cycle management process. It should be process-driven, scalable, and duplicative. This workshop will provide practical guidance on how to design and implement such a process.
2:45 – 3:00 PM – Break
3:00 – 3:45 PM: The Anatomy of a Third-Party Payer Audit
- Vincent Buttaci, Esq and John Leardi, Esq
As if securing third-party reimbursements on the front end was not difficult enough, the looming shadow of payer audits makes holding onto those payments in the future all the more tenuous. But payer audits are here to stay – both post-payment and pre-payment audits. Successful practices must know how to navigate payer audits in order to survive. This workshop will walk through a typical payer audit and then provide practical guidance on how to both prepare for an audit proactively and to effectively respond to an audit once initiated.
3:45 – 4:30 PM: 2018 Coding Updates – Sarah Abshier, DPM
